The goal of the "OPV4.0" project is the production of highly efficient and durable organic solar cells, with their application potential being demonstrated in laminated glass. The increase in efficiency of organic photovoltaics (OPV) is achieved through the development of new additives, which are added to the coating fluids, as well as through the optimization of individual process steps within the production chain of a roll-to-roll system.
The tasks of the LAT include the development, synthesis, and characterization of individual layers and the entire layer stack. This process begins on a laboratory scale and is later implemented as a demonstrator in laminated glass, while the coating fluids and cells are continuously optimized throughout the project duration. A particular focus is on the development of coating fluids with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental compatibility, especially regarding the solvents used. The LAT characterizes and optimizes the layers in terms of their optical and mechanical properties. The layer stacks are also evaluated for their efficiency and long-term stability. Additionally, LAT is responsible for the process development of laser drying for the wet layers. In close collaboration with project partners, the knowledge gained is transferred from the laboratory scale to an industrial scale using a roll-to-roll coating system.
